Things I don't know what to make of

A.S. Byatt:
"I think about how much thinner literary characters have got since the disappearance of Christianity."

Hmm.

1. When did that happen?
2. There are many great literary characters of whom I can't say I ever considered religion to be the driving force.
3. What does that say about her own characters?

"Without religion we've been reduced to sex and death." And that's bad?

    Without metaphysics, we're reduced to literary criticism. That's not a bad thing, imho.

  2. i mean that we're reduced to commenting on how people present ideas in written form as opposed to attacking the arguments from any absolute.

    i'm driving at something here, be patient...
